Magna Carta
A group of nobles decided to make limits for the king in 1215 in the middle of a field in Runnymede near London. They had King John at sword point with soldiers all around him making him approve the document and sign the document. It had list of rights and rules that King John could not ignore. It was the Magna Carta it was made to keep the kings powers have limits. Its a latin phrase meaning “Great Charter.” There were many rights and one of the rights was the habeas corpus meaning “you have the body.” Habeas meant that a man is innocent until proven guilty. Before the right a king could put someone in jail for no reason at all. The important thing about the Magna Carta is that everyone had to obey the law even the king. This law became one of the most basic principal of the English Government. The Magna Carta have a total of 63 demands that King John was forced to agree with. A few demands are (16) No man shall be forced to perform more services for a knights fee or other free holding of land, that is due from it. (31) Neither we nor any royal official will take wood for our castle, or for any other purpose, without the consent [permission] of the owner. Which means no royal people can take your property not just your wood without permission. (38) In future no official shall place a man on trial upon his own unsupported statement, without producing credible [believable] witness to the truth of it. This meant you had to have a witness at the scene to put them on trial. The Magna Carta was one of the first of its kind to protect the right of the people. The Magna Carta is so imbedded into the world that British still considers it to be some of their constitution. Also the U.S Constitution even includes the Magna Carta.
