Charlemagne
By: Nathan S.
Son of Pepin and the grandchild of Charles Martel he was Charlemagne. He was known for being such a warrior and a fine orator. He was also known as Charles the Great because he was so smart and giving. He ruled over the franks from 768 to 814 A.D for 47 years and spent of his 14 years being a ruler for the Holy Roman Empire. Before the charles the great was announced emperor there was a little bit of tension between the pope and constantinople for when Justinian was the ruler. For the success of the franks Stephen the third joined forces with pepin the short and the Frankish king. This strong allegiance with the Franks was important to the papacy. These Frankish allegiance was being threatened by the Byzantine rivals, the Lombards. The Lombards threat was to conquer Rome and the papacy. The was in need of protection to stay the pope. Charlemagne had finally followed his fathers footsteps in the year 774 A.D and became king over the Lombards.
King Charlemagne was a very successful wise ruler and warlord. His army accomplished many battles which led to the expansion of the Frankish kingdom when he was ruler. In order to keep his loyalty from his soldiers and officials were to give them booty after they over ran more land. Charlemagne ruled for christianity which was called “strong right arm of god.” He cherished the church of St. Peter and the apostle at rome and would send piles of gifts and treasures to the popes he also had a very close relationship with Pope Hadrian the first. The first plan that Charlemagne had for the kingdom was to bring back power to Rome. It was very clear that Charlemagne loved roman art he even had some roman architecture and decorations.
The second thing he wanted to do was to defend Church St. Peter. He used power to protect the churches property and provided the materials for the church. This includes enforcing that everyone pays the tithe to the church. Charlemagne went to put the churches money in order in 800 A.D. The same year but on christmas Charlemagne kneeled in front of Saint Peter the pope and crowned Charlemagne the roman emperor. Charlemagne became the foundation of the Holy Roman empire. The Byzantines were outraged because they saw Charlemagne as a barbarian. For a short period of time Charlemagne was able to restore some power to the western empire while still ruling the Franks and Lombards. Charlemagne believed that governments would give the benefit to everyone and improve the lives. He also set up money rules to encourage commerce, tried to raise education and urged better farming methods.
Charlemagne crowned his only son that lived Louis as his successor in 813 A.D by himself without a pope. The position emperor was passed down to Louis in 814 A.D. The empire suffered many threats and battles which lead to its division. Although the empire did not last long after Charlemagne's death he still left us with a wise, strong, proud and courageous warrior and ruler to follow. As we look back on Charlemagne today we recognize that a man in that time period could not have been better than Charles the Great.
