The Crusades
The Crusades:The crusades were a long series of battles between Christians and Muslim in Southern Asia. Europeans called the Holy Land palestine because it was the region where Jesus lived preached and died. Muslim Turks sacked the Holy Land which is the city of the Jerusalem. The Byzantine Emperor became very angry and then hired Pope Urban the second to gather an army to take the Holy Land back from the Turks. Pope Urban the second created an army out christians from all over Europe. The Christians go to war. He told the nobles and king to fight with him. They joined Pope urban the second by the thousands. Now called crusaders came from all over Europe to join in france where they will come up with a plan to tack the HOly Land back.. They even started to sew crosses onto their shirts to show that they were fighting for God. When they marched to the holy land they all yelled, “God wills it!” Some of the crusaders left to fight this was because they thought that God would find favor on them. Some also left for the land and the treasures. Others even left for adventure or to keep themselves busy.
The First Crusade: About 5,000 Crusaders left in 1096 and most of them were peasants. On the way to the Holy Land the crusaders started to attack the Jews because the crusaders thought that it was their fault the Jesus died. Before all of the crusaders most of the peasants that left already were killed by the trained Turks. When the real crusaders arrived in Jerusalem (Holy Land) the crusaders and the Turks fought for about a month until the crusaders took back their Jerusalem. After the Europeans took the land back the rulers made castles and had vassals with homes. Then they also started to trade again.
The Second and Third Crusade: After about 50 years the Muslims slowly started to take land again. So the French and German kings started another crusade in 1147. The second crusade was a total fail because of the poor planning by the kings. The crusaders that were left went back home within a year. The Third crusade was because of the Muslims retook the Holy Land again in 1189. The rulers from France, England and the Roman Empire lead the army to the Holy Land but the problems soon began. The French king left because the French king died leaving King Richard first to take the holy land once more. The leader of the Muslim army Saladin was the Kings main opponent. The Crusaders even respect Saladin for his kindness toward fallen enemies in return the Muslims respected Richard the king for his bravery. After the long battles and wars fought between these two icons King Richard walked away with only capturing a few towns and won protection for the christian pilgrims but Jerusalem was still under control was the Muslim.
The Fourth Crusade: French knights arrived in Venice ready to set sail to the holy land in 1201 to begin the fourth crusade. The knights did not have enough money for this crusade. To make money the Venetians asked the knight to conquer Zara which was a rival trade city. The knights agreed and later even attacked Constantinople and walked away with many treasures. The city that was threatened by the Muslims before the crusaders had been sacked by christians.
The End of the Crusades: Many crusades followed but not a single one of them was successful. In 1291 the Muslims took control of all the Holy land. The crusades had finally ended.
