The Church Hierarchy
The Pope
The catholic church hierarchy started with the Pope being the highest and the monks, nuns and priests being the lowest. The pope was as high as the monarch if not higher. The pope could make new church laws or laws for all Catholics and everyone would have to follow them or else they would be punished. The popes often times solved disagreements between rulers of different kingdoms.
Cardinals
Next in the churches social hierarchy was the cardinals. These men voted for who should be the next pope when the old one dies. They also have been given many nicknames or phrases over the years. One of them being “the princes of the church” this name explains them well because they are only one lower from the pope and could be elected or chosen just like the prince is a death away of the monarch.
Archbishops/Bishops
An Archbishop is a main bishop, a bishop is some that the pope trusts and thinks will do a great job. They could also be perceived as just a higher form of the bishop position. This is just like some places in a city there are more important parts. These men in the church Hierarchy were the center of organization and was associated with the residing in a city. He also did some of the same things as a priest in fact he was a priest just of higher nobility. They may not do services as much as the main priests but when they stepped out of organizing everything the men did do services for important visitors or wealthy patricians from the town.
A bishop has the same job as an archbishop just not as much authority. There are way more men in this social ranking then in the archbishops. The people in this section may have just come from the one lower or just haven't done has much to be noticed to become an archbishop.
Priests,Monks and Nuns
Although some of the other social ranking could be found in an earlier period in medieval Europe these positions were found later than the rest, they were discovered in the 4th century. At first these men were people that wanted to be involved in the church and this religion but did not want to be any higher. But later people found monks that became higher.
The churches social hierarchy was very important because without it the church would not be organized and nothing would run smoothly.
